What are people's thoughts on the Gibson range of basses? I've never been a huge fan, although I am partial to the hollow-bodied models.
This one, however.... thoughts?

I've never really liked Gibson basses too much, wouldn't kick an EB-2 out of bed on a cold night, but otherwise meh. This one is different, this one I hate. They really need to fire their current design team. I love Gibson guitars, but they seem determined to push themselves out of the market with bland, overpriced instruments.

EB's are really top heavy. A good sound, nice necks, but you need to constantly hold them up.
This is the "Gibson" bass I like - an Allen Woody (RIP) Rumblekat
I don't mind the Jack Casady Epiphone bass either.

that fretworn , is a very nice bass ,, in my opinion id have the red one over the other ,, it looks classer ,, and classic but not plain ,, red with gold hardware really speaks to me
The Epi LP Special bass is neat, great for LP lovers *cough* me *cough*
No Offence to any Gibson Bass enthusiasts ...
... but I have to agree with PabloPepper - Gibson really need to sack their current bass design team - they really do have a bad habit of either just doing a "heavy, 4-string, long-neck" version of their guitar designs ... e.g. EB-2=ES33x, EB-3=SG, LP(B)=LP(G) ... or just imitations of other company's line-ups ... e.g. both Grabber & Ripper very reminiscent of the Stingray and the EB looking suspiciously too much like a Fender Jazz bass (alright except for the very standard Gibson headstock)
Seems like the bass design guys at Gibson don't like to work too hard at their jobs ... sort of like the body design team at Porsche - 50 years of producing 911's and they're still turning out the (almost) exact same body! (of course someone's going to now say "but why change perfection?" to which I'll only answer with "Ferrari"! :-D )
... that said however, the Thunderbird (a la Firebird "brother") was one very hot looking bass and (personally) Gibson's best looking bass to date
... but for hot basses the Rickenbacker 400x just can't be beat for sound, looks, playability ... and just downright sex-appeal!!! ;-)
Adam - how about a Ricky 400x kit for PBG?
Wait a minute ... that sounds like Rock and/or Roll!
SG-1 ... "Little Miss" finished in Flamenco Cherry Wudtone
TL-1A ... "Slugger" finished in Antique White Nitro
EX-1 ... "Metal God" finished in nickel-plate (work in progress)
ST-1A ... "Scrapper" stained and finished in linseed oil ... and with the "secret weapon"
GR-1SF ... "Rocker-billy" (just arrived, work in progress)
Scott - good call! Add your voice here dude!Adam - how about a Ricky 400x kit for PBG?

Personally I'm more into guitars that look a little ... different. To be honest the Gibson looks like a P Bass with 2 Humbuckers and a different neck...
