Muzza's second build. A 'proper' PBG PRS-1Q

I'm really struggling with the burst on the first build, but this one is is looking much better. (Maybe it's because this one's a PitBull guitar and the other one isn't???)

I'm almost out of Nullabor Ochre, so I've started on the intensifying coats. It's almost at the colour I want already.

I DID have a problem with the thin veneer on the 'Q' series kit. I noticed that the veneer had 'bubbled' right at the tip of the top horn after a few coats of base coat. Probably exacerbated by the extra sanding I've done installing different binding. Luckily it's black there, so the patch shouldn't show. It's also 'bubbling' right at the bottom edge where the strap pin will go. Again, the repair should be invisible under the black.

I got my neck back from WA yesterday. You can't even tell there was a dodgy fret there.

I can send him plenty of work arounds, people hear i am having a holiday and all this work gets dumped on my bench.

OK, I'm stuck. I need advice and/or opinions.

The neck doesn't have binding. I wanted to stain the neck black, but not sure of a bullet-proof method of masking off the edge of the fretboard, where the binding usually goes.



My other build has white binding, which is simple enough to scrape off with a blade once the staining and intensifying is done.

Or... I could just finish the neck in a natural finish. Not sure if that would look a little odd with the predominantly black body and headstock face.

I've got some of that brush-on latex masking solution, but I'm not confident I'd get the line straight enough.

Muzz. I'm not sure if I'm understanding you correctly. Are you worried that if you tape off the rosewood fretboard (and edges) and stain the maple neck black you are worried about the stain leeching under the tape and bleeding into the rosewood fretboard?

I think thats what you are saying.

I agree that you should go balls out with the black rather than the natural finish because I agree with your style.

If it were me, I would polish the edge of the rosewood fretboard up to 2000, tape it off and stain the maple neck. given the density of the rosewood and with some polishing I doubt it would bleed, but you can't be 100% certain. you could check under the tape after each stain coat and if there was bleed you could try and blot it with a wet rag or if dried sand it back.

I'd probably be more worried about trying to match the maple neck with the body as one black.

Not sure what YOU mean now... I'm pretty sure the neck and body will be almost the same depth of black. I've seen some pretty ordinary results with Wudtone's Black Magic Woman and I've not had a good run with the Black Stump, so I've used Feast Watson Proof Tint black under the Black Stump to give it a push along.

Looks like a job for Micro Mesh Man... I investigated the MMs after you mentioned them in your LP build thread and ordered a set of 9 last night, the 3"x 6" pads.

Ahh I didn't pick up on the use of F&W as well. I just thought the basswood would take the black stump more than the maple neck. just wouldn't want the neck to look washed out compared to the back.

Yep micromesh pads would be good for polishing

Every time I think "That's it... No more sanding..." I come up with another semi-major modification.

I'm not getting any younger, and my belly isn't getting any smaller, so I needed to make allowances for my expanding ribcage...

NOW - No - More - Sanding!!! (0000 steel woolling and micro meshing still to come...)
