In that particular configuration with the neck tone 'up' (the series setting) it disconnects the link from the bridge pup to the bridge volume and reroutes it into the neck pup. So, with the pup selector in the bridge position the bridge pup isn't actually connected to it and therefore no output. However, with the selector in either the middle or neck position you should get both bridge and neck pups linked in series with the neck volume acting as a master volume etc.

Really appreciate the explanation Scott, it works as you have described and I wanted to check I hadn't missed something.
    Thanks very much.

Finished the set-up, intonation done, bridge as level to body as I can get it, need to raise bass side slightly to stop slight rattle on frets (a bit heavy handed with my 'playing').Here's a heap of pics

Wanted to use flat (non slanted) pup rings but they were out of stock at the supplier so the angled ones will do for now.
My headstock logo almost disappears into the black, used water slide paper, vinyl sticker would be better.
There is an odd effect with the red on the grain, it has an almost 'candy' appearance as you move it around in the light. At least that's what I call it, more like it has shades of pink depending on the light angle. Must have rubbed some of the poly into the timber I guess. Enough rambling, here is my version of an Astrojet.

This is an incredible build mate, be super proud of what you've made.

As for the pup rings, just get some sandpaper, a flat surface, and go at it. Then Bob's your uncle - arched pup rings are then flat (and it's all for free too).

Also, if this doesn't place in GOTM, I will eat my hat.
