It's all over the body... don't get me wrong, it looks awesome but after 4 attempts at getting a good finish for this to happen kinda pissed me off haha.

I'll come back to it tomorrow after I've cooled down and re-evaluate the situation

    Hey Mick,

I can fully appreciate "freaking out" when you saw the cracking in the finish (if it had been me there would have been "blue bloody murder" occuring!!!). However ... as soon as I saw the up close pic, a very creative thought struck me ...

If that cracked finish (in the close up) is indicative of what its like all over the body, rather than get rid of it you might try highlighting it! ... do a "wipe over" of the body in white! Done how I'm thinking the white will fill the cracks and (with a very light and judicious clean-up and clear top coat) it might possibly give a "crackling lightning-strike" type of finish.

Might end up look really good - might look like absolute shite ... but if you're going to sand it back it anyway it would be an interesting experiment that would only cost a bit of extra time.

Wait a minute ... that sounds like Rock and/or Roll!

SG-1 ... "Little Miss" finished in Flamenco Cherry Wudtone
TL-1A ... "Slugger" finished in Antique White Nitro
EX-1 ... "Metal God" finished in nickel-plate (work in progress)
ST-1A ... "Scrapper" stained and finished in linseed oil ... and with the "secret weapon"
GR-1SF ... "Rocker-billy" (just arrived, work in progress)

Thanks for the ideas guys! I did think of that Scott (great minds must think alike when 'freaking out') and I actually gave it a try the other day out of frustration/madness/boredem and it came up alright and could work if someone else found themselves in the same situation.

This isn't the look i'm going for unfortunately so i've bit the bullet and its back to raw timber to start from scratch... again.

after saying that for the 4th time now 'start from scratch' has lost all meaning haha

Bugger. Not having much joy - is there something wrong with the paint / environment that's causing the cracking? Guessing humidity / temp??? Don't know much about sprays...

What paint are you using Mick because that is a typical reaction of none compatable paints. For example enamel and acrylic do not mix and this will happen.

The first time the finish went crap it was because of a bad clear coat, the second time I thought I'd accidentally used an enamel and acrylic as Jarrod said but was not the case, environmental factors had a hand to play in that one I'm afraid..... just unlucky

I bit the bullet and got the paint stripper out today... still need to finish off the sides and back before i hit it with the primer.

the neck and headstock are fine so im going to mask them off and save re-doing the whole thing.
