#Planning 5 String Bass
That's good feedback Andy, so effectively, no sanding the Timbermate, then VERY careful sanding?
FrankenLab
Hand crafting guitars, because Death Rays are expensive.
Yup, and I started sanding with 240 grit (lightly) which takes off a lot of the excess timbermate, then when i hit the cap, I only sanded it with 320 and 400 grits so it doesn't take a lot off and you can "control" the sanding a bit more.
The corollary is the cap wont be as smooth as you would like it and the spalted caps are a bit ripply anyway. I just had to build up heaps of coast of Tru oil to get the cap flat...

Bit of risk grain filling for very little gain in grain popping IMHO.
If you feel you need to pop the grain just apply black ink pad ink and wipe off as much as you can with a damp rag no more than 30 minutes to 1 hour after application and same again next day or no more than 24 hours later. A very light sand with 320 by hand, no cork block, should help with taking off any more of the black ink the damp rag did not remove.
Still reckon go straight to the stain as way too risky with the thin caps.
Another method would be 'load up' the rag for initial stain coat then a very, very light sand after it has had time to cure to bring out some lighter bits underneath then go again. This has the effect of using the stain to darken the grain and thus pop it in the shade of the colour scheme you are laying down.
The less you have to sand the cap the better.
