So a bit of progress today. I went on to create recesses for each plate.
I first marked where each plate was going, and then used MDF sheets to build a jig to guide the dremel plunge router base.
I started by only using guides for the long sides, but of course got carried away in one spot and went past the line, so I ended up using guides on all 4 sides:

Was pretty tedious and took a long time, but got there.

Looks okay with the steel plates, it will keep the edges lower than the surface so I can seal around each plate:

Nest step we'll have to clean the edges, but that will be part of the overall sanding.

    Looks outstanding.

I honestly dont think you can go wrong how your doing this as the used universe thing comes into play here making the look and feel perfect. Washes are going to work a treat around the edges i rekon.

Awesome stuff. Gotta get me a dremel router head now...

A bit of progress. I cleaned up all cuts and sanded the body to 240.
The gap filled with timbermate slurry and sanded again, this time to 320:

Was then time to put together the fancy 'spraying booth':

And i applied the first coats of undercoat:

Good to finally get some progress going and I'm looking forward to my first solid paint job!

2x coats of undercoat on and it really shows where I haven't sanded the timbermate as good as I should... well, i was planning to build up a few coats anyway so that will cover it.

    That's come up really great!

I've been thinking that a dremel might be something I'd use, and now I know it will be. What model do you have?

I've got the Dremel 3000 with the flexible shaft. $128 from the green shed.

I also got the plunge router attachment. Some on the forum say that the StewMac plunge router attachment for rotary tool is much more stable (http://www.stewmac.com/Luthier_Tools...uter_Base.html).
I can't comment as I've only used the dremel one, but it does look a lot more solid being all metal.
