Hey Muzza, glad the outcome is good. You could pop the headstock grain with a watered down dye, but depends on the thickness of the veneer whether you have enough meat to sand it back.
Your PRS neck must have had the frets slotted after a liquid lunch !

Same bloke that drilled the machine head holes on my other PRS kit.

But it's from a different factory - probably his cousin.

...and I'm never going to try to pop the grain ever again. Too much angst and hard work.

Muzza popping the grain is under rated in my opinion. I don't do any pre-sanding, whack the black stain on out of the box.
Touch wood (or thin veneer) I've never sanded through a veneer.

Remember that before trying to sand the black dye out of the grain, you can pull a lot of it back ut with a clean wet rag. I'm with Wokka in that *if* I'm gonna pop the grain I never pre-sand the veneer. I use the post pop sanding to do that for me.

    cheers,
    Gav.

I bought a Gotoh Tunomatic bridge, but it's different to what I'm used to installing. It doesn't have a threaded 'bush' that inserts into the guitar body.

    I got this.

But I was expecting something more like this...

Those 2 'bushes' in the centre of the bottom photo are missing. But all the photos I've found on the 'net showing this style of tunomatic bridge don't show anything extra.

PBG may have some in their 18kg parts bin, send em an email

I had to source a set from the U.S.A for a bloke, same situation, from memory they were $15+ postage from me to him, but i dont have any unless i ordered them, not something i usually keep hanging around.

They're different to the kit bridges. Much thinner posts.

    Apparently it's a 'Kalamazoo' style tune-o-matic.

Yeah the Gotoh one requires you to use the original threaded rod posts, its an upgrade to the original ABR-1 bridge.

Let me see what i can find out...

Seems I just need to drill and tap directly into the guitar body. No insert bushes required...

It's just as well that my PRS-1Q kit doesn't have predrilled bridge holes.

wow I've never seen that type bridge Muzza that doesn't have a bush.
I don't like the idea of drilling the thin thread into the basswood (I presume).
How is the height of the bridge adjusted by screwing the round piece below the bridge ?

The bridge won't have much tension on it but the tailpiece will definitely need a bush drilled into the body to hold the string tension.
