Man Wokka, the grain on that beast is so strongly defined that it's hard to believe its real. It looks fantastic!

Hey Dan Here's the watermelon look with red tortoise scratch plate. Forum members does this colour work?

The body colour looks a little too washed out for the red pickguard in the 1st pic, but it looks good in the 2nd pic... the green looks deeper and works with the red. But, the blue on the headstock clashes a bit with the red and green combo. I think if you want to use the red on green for the body you may need to try to tweak the headstock and either fade the blue or try to get it more green to match the Ash (or keep trying to make the body more blue).

How many base coats have you put on the Ash?

    Scott.

Hey Scott I haven't got to the base coats yet on the body so 4 deep color coats only. Thanks for your view. I'm hoping a few base coats will make the body a bit more Blue we'll see what happens

Hey Woks, that grain looks amazing.

Unfortunately the grain in the one I'm doing for Serena is not as pronounced. Also I had a heck of a job getting the glue and filler out without doing too much damage to the wood. I used a small wire brush and very course sandpaper, but managed to rip the wood a little bit, any other suggestions for dealing with it?

    cheers

Hey Robin that's a bummer. Sounds like more sanding or if you have ripped too much away you may need to fill with timbermate. Can you please email a photo in this thread?

Thanks Woks, but I stopped before it got too bad and the old iphone camera doesn't pick it up too well. But there is still a bit more glue to go.

The main problem is that I was probably too heavy handed with the wire brush and I started to rip out the softer 'grain' areas, and leaving the harder wood pretty much alone. I've sanded so much now that I'm afraid that I will start polishing the wood

I don't really want to grain fill as Serena has her heart set on a matte/satin black guitar and as the grain probably won't be visible I was trying to keep the grain 'texture' as the main feature.

Not to worry, I have contingency plans.

And the watermelon is looking cool.

Got 1st base coat on lastnight, after 4 deep coats the colour is still green so no point going any more deep coats. The steel wooling between coats is paying off, its getting bit of a natural gloss which is good, hopefully less top gloss but it will more than likely get at least 5 top gloss coats. Hope to enter this for December GOTM and weather is warming up in Perth so should be doable.
