I love the idea of natural flames.
You could maybe try reversing the mask/frisket to the non-flame part and put a couple of coats of clear on the natural flames first to, at least partially, seal it agaist the stain?
Then again, a touch of very faint trans-black stain bleed at the edge of your flames could give them a nice soft edge. I think some testing will be in order.

Ahh yes Wierdy, testing! I better get on that. I want to go TO on this build not spray clear. If i paint a few coats of TO in the flame part before staining maybe it will seal enough. Yes - testing is the answer.
