Welcome DB07! In regards to the first question, I polish the binding with steel wool (fine,super fine) before staining so any stain that happens to get on it does not take. Else it can seep into deeper scratches. I would also mask off the binding for added protection (can be a big job).

You can tape the binding off, but not all tapes will do the job as well, some will let the stain go through regardless...not as much, but not 100%
What you want to get is the tape they use in Auto repair / finishing shops, this is 3M 471 Blue tape [easy to find on Ebay for a OZ seller] if getting something else, you might as well buy a scraper as well, as you are going to end up scraping the binding to take ant stain [or finishes after the stain] off the binding.....you don't sand it off, you scrape it off.

Hi DB07, presume the neck is maple? If so do not sand past 320 or maybe even 240 if you want it to soak up any stain colour. By going to 1200 it will be too smooth and almost repel any attempt at staining. Once you get colour on and then some top coats you can gradually up the grits to 1200 or so to make it as smooth as a baby's ....

First Stain have been put on the top and the side. Very happy with the colour so far, but I think I want to get it a little deeper in red.





Now for our new favourite segment, 'What did Daniel learn this week?'

1. If you use cloth size bigger than the recommended 5cm x 5cm, it absorbs way too much of the stain.

2. My idea of using the bottom of an old cardboard takeaway coffee cup may not be the best idea aswell, as I'm pretty sure it also absorbs the stain. Yoghurt containers it is.

I love Karijini red. I would go about 3 - 4 stain coats, if you can stretch it that far. When you use the intensifying coat, it will deepen as well.

Looking at my next steps, I used a bit too much on the first coat, due to using too much cloth, and then using an old takeaway coffee cup that seemed to absorb the stain. So needing to put in an order for more stain, which DingoTone product will act as a topcoat, so I can order them together?... I am assuming the wax.

Hi DB07, axe looks great after one coat. Good move to let it cure for over a week.
Your Karijini red stain kit should have come with a topcoat. If not then ask DB to include a bottle in your order for more stain, which should come with a top coat anyway.
The Dingowax I've found is best used on the fingerboard
