    I think this may be because necks generally have finer grain, the larger the grain to the wood (e.g. Ash) the more troubles there seem to be with the DT top coat. This is one reason why I think inadequate grain filling is at least part of the problem (for me anyway).

    Ah, yes, that would explain it. I didn't do any grain fill. Something to take into consideration for the next build.

    Good point Robin, the most satisfying part about the building so far has been the stuff that didn't work out, working out how to save it, and then having it work out in a completely unexpected way. Bit like life really.
