Thanks for the idea about the 45mm pine, but then I run into the problem of no router to do the neck pocket. With my skills and tools I could never get a decent “floor” on the neck pocket. Pup routes don’t matter so much but a bad fit between neck and body is a no go. Plus cutting through 18mm of pine with a coping saw was bad enough, but 45mm!!! Hey, I might be dumb but I’m not completely stupid lol.



The neck ferrules do look cool and I have wanted to try some, but I feel more comfortable using the plate. Decisions, decisions.

no worries Rob, I reckon you have the skill and patience to chisel out the neck pocket.

There was a guy on ABC lastnight that reminded me of you Rob, he re-built an old ruined stone house and one stone at a time rebuilt the house, he was so patient and hard working haha

source/make a slightly smaller neck plate so you can move the screws in slightly. This is such a custom job i think a custom plate would be fitting!

Thanks for the idea of a custom plate, that never occurred to me, but I have decided to go with ferrules. Never used them before, so seeing as this whole guitar is a bit of a test bed I might as well see how I go with them. And they do look kinda cool.

haha Rob some of the stones would have weighed 60+kg so eventually he got a small crane setup to do the lifting !

Look forward to the next step of this build Rob, I tell you it's a forum first to build a scratch body with no power tools.

Once I lost power at the workshop for about 7 hours so it was weird to go back to the old hand tools.

Candle light and a small speaker/mp3 player we built the first 4D clock in the semi dark hahah

We use that excuse for the hour number markers not being very uniform haha nothing to do with heaps of Drambuie hahha

Love the idea of the ferrules that said - being a wood ludite - how will the ferrules go in pine? Is it going to be too soft?

pine should be ok Bman, I ordered these from Realparts, 14mm diameter bushes

could always put a bigger washer behind them if he was worried about the pine being too soft

Yes, the Ferrules will work well. You might also consider using Hide Glue on the neck pocket to give it added strength. The advantage with the hide glue is that it will melt easy enough if you ever need to replace the neck.

Hey Brendan, I was also concerned that pine might be a bit soft for ferrules. But this whole guitar is a bit of an experiment so I might as well find out now, it might save some heartache down the track if I decide to build another one.

The ferrules I ordered from ALS look to be pretty much the same as the ones you got Warren,

I hadn't thought of using hide glue, I will keep that in mind. Although I don't think I have any concerns with the neck pocket itself as the "floor" is 9mm marine plywood. I am hoping that will give it some strength.
