Thread: Tindrrel's JR-1M

  1. #61
Most concentric pots seem to have ~1/4" thread length, which is really only useful on pickguards and control plates.

I think the longest ones I've found are the Alps Stacked Dual Concentric pots (250K, 500K), with a threaded section length of 8.75mm... still pretty tight but maybe just doable. NOTE: The Alps style pots require different stacked knobs than the CTS stacked pots, so check before you buy.

I've got a couple out in the shed, so if you can wait until tomorrow I'll double-check the thread length for you.

Edit: These look to be the same pots on Allparts, but they list them as 9.5mm thread (250K-250K Concentric Pot with Detent, 500K-500K Stacked Concentric Pot).

realparts have those, but they say it has a detent in the top shaft - which is where I'd want the volume. It comes without a detent according to allparts, but realparts don't have them. And as you say, they need different knobs.

Looks like I was just too quick to buy and try thinking it could be made to work. End up shelved as expensive spares I'll probably never use.

Those alps ones show up all over the place and seem to be some Korean made one sold under lots of different brand names.

May just give in and go back to 4 in a row and no switch.

Grabbed some pics of my Alps 500K concentric pots for you:

And, just as a quick test, mounted on a 6mm thick strip of wood with a washer and the nut finger-tight:

Same, with the knobs loosely sitting in place:

Anything around 5-6mm or so thick should be fine with these pots, so I think they'll work with your JR's cavity.

My pots have a centre detent on both the upper and lower shaft, but it's not too heavy/clunky. I'll be using the pots as a combo vol/tone on a bass I'm planning, so the detent doesn't really matter to me either way.

    Thanks Weirdy, that's really useful.

I had realtone on the phone today organising returns and they measured up their one of that pot for me too. Will be placing my order soon.

Held it in place and mimed playing up that end of the fretboard and once the transition is puttied up it should be pretty comfortable.

Nice work dude! It's a great addition, executed beautifully. I've got a set neck coming my way too, so maybe I'll take a leaf out of your book.

    cheers,
    Gav.
