Hey Ben, the walnut timbermate will be great in the ash grain. I used this on my Ash LP and I was very happy with the look.

    cheers,
    Gav.

Hi Ben that grain looks amazing, you scored big time !

400 grit should be fine enough before first stain coat.

Only need to steel wool between coats

The Timbermate really helped, without it the grain is far less defined. Really good idea and only adds about 20 min or so (including drying) to the sanding down. Glad I did not go any darker with the Timbermate as it would have been to dark I think. Also worth taking your time sanding it down and moving up the grades I started at 120 and moved to 360 then 400 each sanding helped bring out the grain as well. learning loads already and its only day 2 :P

Ben don't skip too many grits. If you went 120 to 360 grit you may miss some sanding some machine and tooling marks.
Looks damn fine in the last photo
