Thanks for the input guys. If I paint the 'guard it'll take it back to the original plan of an antigua style scheme.
Need to wander off and do some experimenting.
actually yeah the white does kinda pop against the off white. ah i cant make my mind up, its gonna look sweet whatever you do im sure
Appreciate the optimism Ben, let's hope this update lives up to it.
Followed Weirdbits' excellent tutorial on making templates and pickguards and made a new 'guard and truss rod cover out of 2mm clear acrylic. Stock 'guard placed on top of my revised version.
and the new acrylic one
Painted the back of the new 'guard with what I had left of the dyes and it's alright but not what I had hoped for. It was fun trying to do the burst in reverse - dark green then white- without being able to see how the burst is working as you are going along.
Mock up with new 'guard
Also, Mauro's natural finish RC-4 is really good!

Wow, that is such a brilliant burst. I have been watching this build....awesome outcome for you.
you did a great job on the pickguard burst but hmmm, yeah im thinking maybe white or cream. if you could make the stock one just very slightly off white i think thatd look good, the plain white is just too white for this i think
Watch out Grant, DB is coming for that bass! Lock it up with the highest security you can!
I also agree with DB, it is fantastic!
Thanks everyone! Even though the green on the pickguard didn't come out as dark as the body, I'll live with it.
It should be safe from DB coz I used a banned product - maybe. Next step is to scuff back the body and polish it - should be cured enough by now, then shielding, wiring, etc...
Thanks again
Grant
