    Thanks all,

you have convinced me to remove all the tape and paper. Just need to give the top a fine thinners only mist coat. The temps this morning left me with a little orange peel on my last clear mist blend.

Clear coats on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, imperfections and all. Then it can rest up for a month.

    Thanks - @Stan and @Gav.

Sprayed clear this morning, I ended up using my bigger gun, boy did it churn through my clear. Anyways, seemed to go on alright minus some orange peel. So now the waiting game begins before fine level sanding and logo install.

I have also decided for a cost saving exercise in custom pickup winding that I will use the stock pickups and just install some alnico magnets in place of the stock ceramics. Will be interesting to know how they sound this way.

A few more pics to follow.

nice one Kane looks excellent, sure once you sand back the orange peel next coat will be glossier. What type of clear you spraying ?
Interested to hear how you change the magnets in the stock pups.
Your workshop looks just like Jarrod's. Park the cars in the driveway and use the double garage for axe work !

    Wokks,

using what I have left of some acrylic clear lacquer (septone). Not sure if there will be any coats to follow. Will let it cure and then see how it sands. May try just spraying some thinners to melt it flatter.
I will document the pickup strip down, should just be a matter of unsoldering the chrome pickup cover, loosening the coil screws so I can slide out the bar magnet with minimum movement to upset the wiring placement. Won't know until I pull it apart. Stay tuned. Purchase alternate magnets and slide them in. Re-assemble and you are back in business.
    Couple of pics to help.
My garage is full and while no proper work shed, you have to do what you can with what you got. I will have my own work space someday.

cool thanks for that humbucker detail, I'll be interested how the magnet change goes, I got a pile of spare stock pups to experiment with. Be very interested to hear if they sound any better too.
Might be worth starting a new post for the humbucker magnet change, I'm sure others will be interested

Sliding out the magnet *may* be tough as the factory seems to use a gummy glue to hold things in place, or at least they used to. When I did a magnet swap I on a set of PBG SG-1F stockies it was pretty messy in there with gum and wax, one magnet could be moved by tapping it out but the other needed the coils removed to free it (but I was doing that anyway). Here's what it looked like:

crikey Weirdy the factory love glue don't they ! So half the glue on our bodies and caps are probably from the bloke who just put half a litre of glue on the pup magnets !

Thanks for the heads up Weirdy. What mods did you do to the stock pickups or did you just need some parts?

Hey Wokks, which burb is the 4D factory in Perth?
