Ok, quick update. It turns out this guitar really is my xmas present. I managed to sneek the neck out of the box earlier this week and shape the headstock before it was wrapped up and placed under the xmas tree..

So I went for a trad 'G' style shape on this one. Took a bit of tweaking to get it looking even on both sides of headstock (Left and right, front and back) but got there in the end. I ended up using some 120 grit paper wrapped around a pencil for final shaping.

Looks pretty G to me, nice job. Just check the tuner hole spacing to the edge on each side when it's unwrapped again, as to my eye in the photo above it looks like there may be a mm or two more on the treble side.
    Scott.

Cheers, yes that's a good point. I had the same issue on my LP. A job for Xmas day!

nice headstock shape Andrew, nice work working on a xmas present, very sneaky but I like it.
Agreed with Weirdy the tuner holes aren't quite symmetrical.
Maybe post a pic with the tuners in place it might not be so obvious and may not need plugging and re-drilling

Ok so with Xmas now out of the way time to move on with the build...

Sanded 180, 240 & 360 with grain raised in between on back and sides.

Dyed the flame maple front black (will sand back to highlight the flame) but for a moment the thought did pass through my head to go all black..

Not too many glue spots, a few tiny ones where the veneer is joined down the middle and a small patch on right hand side midway on the edge of veneer (cannot really see in the attached as next to the basswood)

Next job sand back the veneer (carefully..)

flame looks good Andrew, and love the contrasting cap and no cap look of the top.
I am yet to see a G headstock drilled symmetrically from the factory...
