Gav it's a cabots oil base stain. So I've been informed by the paint shop lady that they use a clear base now and tint to obtain colour. Same as paint. However, as this is a new process they really haven't got much more than your stock timber colours. If you want to go a "colour" rather than a timber stain you'll need to find a paint shop that's willing to play with the tints as the base mixes differently to a paint base. Bit of a lucky dip.

The photo below shows the recipe for my blue (just in case I want to use it again).

nice one Shoey, think the paint shop nailed the tint colour nicely. What sort of clear coat you got planned, same brand Cabots clear ?

hey Shoey, tru oil will look good, you can get a high gloss with it but will take about 8-12 thin coats. Do the same apply thin coats and steel wool between coats. Allow at least 24 hours between coats so it fully cures.
Naughty room is crowded but whats 1 more bloke !

Surely lacquer would get a better finish with way less coat? What about rattle pack options? I'm TO the neck cause I like it under hand.

if you have a spray gun compressor then sure lacquer/acrylic/poly will give a better finish with much less coats. Rattle cans take practice to get a nice smooth finish without runs and the nozzle tends to get blocked and spray unevenly toward the end of the can so I'd steer away from that option if you have little experience with these.

Hmmm. I can access a spray gun. I'll have to investigate.

hey Shoey, depends what level of gloss you are after on the body.
If you want a medium gloss then about 4-5 coats of tru-oil will give you that. If you want a thick gloss coat then I'd investigate the spray gun. Again that takes practice to get a good finish. Have a look at Jarrod's videos on this website
