Shame about that burst, I was diggin' the headstock one! I tell you what though that body the way it is now with that wicked figure showing through looks perfect.

Well, I'm not one for instructions, Wokkaboy, (you can possibly tell by the number of messes I seem to always get) but thought I'd have a read of these and was happy to find I could give it 3 coats at an hour apart. The waiting 24 hours before the next I didn't like too much but still plenty to do while waiting.
The stuff is FeastWatson mastertouch, a french polish (premium shellac based varnish). It gets very hard, there is a drip in one of the pickup cavities and went to "flick" it off I will either need to chisel it off or sand it .

Enough about that, gave it two coats of this set, will apply the third coat about 2:00pm and I can see a bit of success happening, when the light is on it there is a nice smooth looking shinny finish, maybe some success here.
Done, might not need another coat ('s) will give it a rub back tomorrow and see what it looks like, think the neck has enough but may need another on the headstock face.


The finish is very much like the base color for the burst, then I remembered I did add some of the tint that I used first. Which is also a feastwatson product and just happens to mention that it can be used to tint the shellac. At least that is something in my favour.

It looks much the same so got my pickups out (see pic)

Seymour Duncan (USA) L - 450S - N. After much searching on the net OK Not a duncan, it's a Bill Lawrence it's a neck pup but has 16.6 ohms

Seymour Duncan P94 P90 in a hum-bucking case 15.6 ohms

Di-Marzio
Super Distortion 4 wires 13.3 ohms and this is reported to be the hottest.

Not sure just which one will go where now. The P94 was always going in the middle. Worries.

Any thoughts on this?

Personally, I would put the hottest pickup in the bridge position and step down towards the neck. I really don't think the fact one is designated a neck pickup is gonna matter if your not using them in a set.

Neck pickups usually have a higher voltage or current or whatever it is they measure them with, as the string movement is less focussed.

Thanks for the link, Fretworn, and yes Pablopeppe, that is what I was thinking of.

I had the Bill Lawrence in the neck and the super distortion in the bridge (of another guitar) but the BL was far more powerful that the SD.
The P94 was always going in the centre so that works out fine.

I am hoping that some good sounds might come form this combination, specially since I hope to have some "custom" switching in there.

No pics today, it still looks the same only darker, not gold, not dirty lemon more like burnt tobacco. Oh well.

Tomorrow is another day and will see what happens there.

Just been do ing a little bit here and there, not much to tell.

Except:

I have decided that I'm happy with the finish on the face, however not the color, even thought about striping it off and starting again but decided it wasn't that bad. So almost happy with the face but the back, had it stained walnut, but it wasn't just right, striped it off started again, still not to my liking so, today, I sanded back to bare wood (a lot of work) and gave it one coat of golden teak. Really didn't like it too much but thought "thats it".Just finished giving it a spray with some polestar I had lying around,,,,,,,,,finally it's starting to look ok. So another few coats with some light sanding then start to worry about the electrics.

Which, I keep changing my mind about, just really want a volume and a tone, but I got all these switches (and nothing to do) so might as put them dont have to use them. Guess I'll find out what they can do when it finally gets plugged in.

Another thing that has me puzzled is my P94, was told it was a Seymour Duncan, but sure it is not, can find out no information on this at all so will be interesting to see how it goes. My latest thoughts are it may be a Bill Lawrence anyway it's a hot pup so may need to keep a bowl of water handy.

I'm thinking the caramel colour on the top and the back/sides is looking pretty awesome. I especially like the way the grain has popped. That ash body and veneer is just beautiful.

Well! did I mention that I wasn't sure about the face of this guitar? Ha, it is now official, it's great. Gave it another spray, and it just popped out of its dull life and started to live. So, a slight sand and another coat should do the face very nicely.

The back, I decided to leave it go today, sort of an R&R day, tomorrow I'll leave the face and sand and spray the back. May be another two after that.

The pics' are taken with the body keeping cool resting on my air-conditioner for an hour.
