Fender3, don't tell me you were a Hee Haw fan??

A little 400 grit sandpaper and a little touch-up red, and this is where we stand tonight. Closer. Click image for larger version.

Dave King, I love that whole album.

Fender3, Is that how you got your handle here, when the fender fell off? Thanks for brightening my day, both of you.

At the time I created the handle, Hee Haw may still have been on the air (for the yougsters "on the air" is how we used to say "live steaming"). At the time I had three Fender guitars. I used to say that I had a pickup with fenders, and a Fender with pickups. I don't think that joke works in Australia. Not that it it worked all that well here either...

The neck is finished. Two or three coats of Old Masters stain, maple flavor, then 25 or so coats of TruOil with periodic very light sanding, and 2 final coats of TruOil cut with terps. IMO, the feel of a guitar neck finished this way cannot be beat. Lemon oil on the fret board. I don't like what I did with the headstock decal, but not unhappy enough to sand and re-finish. Grover tuners. I just noticed that each piece has a tiny letter on the bottom, on the side that faces the headstock. Some have E, some A, D or F. Any significance to that or has anyone noticed?

The body is stained with TransTint stain from Woodcraft Supply, Bordeau color, mixed with methanol. First coat was fairly dilute, and showed the grain well, but the wood looked kind of washed out. Second coat was much more concentrated, and I am happier with the color. For some reason, the bottom looked kind of blotchy, so I mixed more red with a little black Rit Dye. I wanted to try to feather some of the darker color onto the front and back, but attempts on a test board didn't look too good. I don't want a hard line or a jagged edge. Don't know just where I was going when I started this, and don't know what it will be when finished. What it is is what it is, I guess.

I would have used a clear over it either lacquer or 2k that would look beautiful

Thanks for a good suggestion, Phrozin.

Horses are shedding and the lawn needs mowing and this project should have been finished weeks ago. It's now getting a few coats of wipe-on poly. I am following a Canadian dude named Brad Angove. He suggests applying the first couple of coats of wipe-on, gently, with 1500 grit sandpaper. Idea is that the sandpaper creates a small amount of fine, colored sawdust which serves to fill in tiny imperfections. I'll let you know.
