I am not from Miami, and the last time I saw someone use a hoof rasp I still lived on the dessert side of Washington State (about 45 mi. from where they hold the Pendleton Roundup). It was important to both my grandfathers that I learn the basics of riding and caring for horses, but that was a very long time ago.

I think a lot of us use the 3 ft rule. In my case, "not too visible to a man on horseback" might be a good rule.

"not too visible to a man on horseback" might be a good rule.My new motto! Of course, everything looks better from up there.
By way of checking in - neck has 5 coats of TruOil, with about 20 or so to go. Body is getting its second dose of Timbermate. Getting ready for stain.

Well, to paraphrase the American humorist Mark Twain, "Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated." So, I am still alive up here, but it has been a wacky couple of months. Snow last night, so winter must not be over.

The neck is finished. Two or three coats of Old Masters stain, maple flavor, then 25 or so coats of TruOil with periodic very light sanding, and 2 final coats of TruOil cut with terps. IMO, the feel of a guitar neck finished this way cannot be beat. Lemon oil on the fret board. I don't like what I did with the headstock decal, but not unhappy enough to sand and re-finish. Grover tuners. I just noticed that each piece has a tiny letter on the bottom, on the side that faces the headstock. Some have E, some A, D or F. Any significance to that or has anyone noticed?

The body is stained with TransTint stain from Woodcraft Supply, Bordeau color, mixed with methanol. First coat was fairly dilute, and showed the grain well, but the wood looked kind of washed out. Second coat was much more concentrated, and I am happier with the color. For some reason, the bottom looked kind of blotchy, so I mixed more red with a little black Rit Dye. I wanted to try to feather some of the darker color onto the front and back, but attempts on a test board didn't look too good. I don't want a hard line or a jagged edge. Don't know just where I was going when I started this, and don't know what it will be when finished. What it is is what it is, I guess.

I did not hear the rumors, but I'm glad they are not true.

The neck looks great - nice and glossy! The body colour looks similar to Aussie "jarrah" stains. I like what it is! Funny how a build can take you on a journey that you had not anticipated!

As far as the Grover tuner letters go - I have read that they are codes for the machines that they are cast from. An in-house tracking system.
    PitBull Builds: FVB-4, LP-1SS, FBM-1, AG-2, TB-4, SSCM-1, TLA-1,TL-1TB, STA-1HT, DSCM-1 Truckster, ST-1, STA-1, MBM-1, MBM custom, GHR-1 (Resonator).

Scratch Builds: Pine Explorer, Axe Bass, Mr Scary, Scratchy Tele's.

The little voices in my head keep telling me "build more guitars"

Thanks for the information, TD. There is absolutely no apparent difference from one tuner to another, regardless of the letter. So this explanation makes sense.

I like the color choice. You've brought out the grain nicely on the body. The color is great. It looks traditional without being a traditional color. The neck also looks great. The slightly darker than usual neck looks great with the dark fingerboard.

OK, sportsfans. As per the country-rock band BR-549, "I gotta do somethin' even if it's wrong." I really wanted to do something. So, several more YouTube videos, several more failed test boards. The Rit dye is just not cutting it. What else do I have on the shelf. How about Fiebings Leather Dye, U.S. Marine Corp Black. Haven't decided how well I like it, and I need to do a little more work on symmetry. Not brave enough to try the front. Click image for larger version.

Remember, "The number to call is Bee Arr Faav Fore Naan." So said Junior Samples.
