    Hello Paul.

Welcome to the club. A lot of the ash kits seem to come with some nice grain pattern.

I did an ash strat earlier this year and was very happy with the result.

    Hi and welcome.

Do be aware that ash (if not swamp-ash) can be quite a heavy wood. Pretty, but heavy.

Swamp ash is ash (of several sub-species) that has grown in a very wet environment. A larger percentage of the wood's mass is water, but when it dries out, it becomes significantly lighter. Unfortunately, a lot of this comes from the USA where drainage for irrigation and climate change has dried out a lot of the swamp areas where the ash used to grow, and coupled with the ash die-back disease, it's in very short supply and prices for it have risen considerably.

So most ash used for guitars these days is standard ash. It can easily make 1-1.5kg/2-3lbs difference to the weight of a guitar.

I just finished an offset guitar for my daughter built with standard ash. It is super hard, should be very durable. It's quite a bit heavier than my poplar Strat body, even though the Strat body is a hard tail and not routed for a trem, and the offset body is routed for a strat-style trem. It's also VERY hard. First time I have ever broken screws in a body. Even stainless steel screws. Be careful to drill a big enough hole, and use some wax on the bridge screws. In other words don't do it the way I did ;-)

It took a lot of filling, but has nice grain. My daughter wanted it finished solid which seems like a bit of a waste for such a pretty wood.

It's a bit more hit-and-miss with grain on a basswood body...but I just looked and they are at least a bit lighter and in-stock. They are also a steal at the pricepoint I see them at. It looks like the ash bodies may be out of stock.

TD's done a bunch of Tele's (including an ash tele that looks great)...and may have some insights on different woods if it's hard to get ash.

Hi Paul, I just finished a JBA 4 Ash, with a few variations to the kit hardware. It's quite impressive, or so I would like to think, but as said, it is quite heavy in comparison my Pbass, which, I have not yet identified as to what wood was used but quite a lot lighter.
