A question for the gurus - I noticed that the design on the back covers all the back and there are no string thru holes. Is there any difference to the guitar of the strings go through the bridge (a bit like a Gibson) compared to Leo Fender's concept of stringing through the body?
I do not have any string throughs, but they are meant to have a greater sustain than the top loading bridges. The string through bridges also have less saddle problems (Simon B mentions this on a post at https://www.buildyourownguitar.com.a...l=1#post223122.)
    PitBull Builds: FVB-4, LP-1SS, FBM-1, AG-2, TB-4, SSCM-1, TLA-1,TL-1TB, STA-1HT, DSCM-1 Truckster, ST-1, STA-1, MBM-1, MBM custom, GHR-1 (Resonator), FH-5V (Acoustic).

Scratch Builds: Pine Explorer, Axe Bass, Mr Scary, Scratchy Tele's.

The little voices in my head keep telling me "build more guitars"

FWIW, I think the issue that Simon is referring to is more prevalent with Strat-style saddles. Barrel-style saddles as in a tele should not have the issue of lifting the back of the saddle, even of top-loaded. I have more experience with basses, and have both string-through and top loading bridges. I don't notice any difference in sustain. If you were making it for me, I'd want the artwork intact more than I'd want the string through ;-)

I had a similar issue to the one that Simon describes with the low E with a top loading hard-tail strat-bridge. It was lifting the saddle enough to cause a buzz. I swapped out the cast saddles on my cheapo-bridge for a stamped saddle and the problem went away.

This is so ornate and awesome! Already an absolute work of art!

Thanks for all the comments! I made some good headway on the art today- finished wood burning the outline, laid down the base color and started painting the roses!

This is the ugly part of my process. I lay down a layer of color that is extreme, because the next step is to add translucent paint over top. I almost always look at this stage and ask "what did i do??" But it gets muted significantly after i paint over this color.

    And back:

I also started painting the roses. And now it is starting to look like it's supposed to.

Trying to decide if I'm done for the day, or if I want to keep painting. This is my favorite part, so it's hard to put the brush down...

I started filling in the background last night. It's a metallic purple, which makes it hard to photograph, but gives great depth in person. The first purple i laid down was way too light. This one is a better color to put the black over on the edges.

I'm stuck on what to do for the neck- whether to make it purple or black, and how to cut the headstock. I don't really care for the normal telecaster headstock shape, so trying to decide on what shape and whether to burn roses on the headstock as well. The headstocks i like best are pretty ornate. I don't know that my wood cutting skills would allow me to do what i really want. If anyone has any thoughts on what i should do with the neck/headstock, please share.

The wings aren't painted yet. I think I'm going to darken up the shadows in the wings before painting them. But here it is so far:

Wow - this thing is so cool. As far as the neck - a strat headstock?

I also weirdly think something similar to the headstock I just made (reverse firebird inspired) would look cool:

    Lovely work ElleBrooke.

IMO, any of purple or black (or neutral!!) would look great!

I'm also not a huge fan of the tele headstock shape. Research headstocks online and you can get lots of ideas. I have done a number of tele and strat builds and tend to use a couple of goto shapes. I have some shapes shown at https://www.buildyourownguitar.com.a...l=1#post222831. Nothing original though!

Thank you both, LexLuthier and Trevor Davies. I really like the headstocks with the concave curve down the length. I'm going to spend some time drawing this week, and see whether to do just a shape, or put images on it. I found an awesome one that had a dimensional, carved, outstretched wing, but I am not the best carver. Thank you for the examples!

Today I painted the sunburst. Still need to work on the wings and I may darken the vines a bit. But i think it's coming along ok.

I also worked on some headstock shapes. My son likes the one on the right. I prefer the left, but ultimately, I am not a left handed guitarist, so I won't be playing it, and will defer to his preference. lol

I'm also trying to figure out how to rig up something in my house to hang the guitar from while drying between clear coats. Planning on lots and lots of wipe on poly coats, so i would prefer to do the whole thing each coat. Any innovative ideas on this?
