    Spraying metallic flakes

    Hi
I was hoping to get some advice on spraying metallic flakes. Never tried it before. Found 30g of 0.008 flakes in the colour I want.

Anyone any advice on the easiest way to go about starting out to try this? From what I can gather I can spray a black or silver primer on and then mix the flakes with clear coat? So a few coats and then just clear coat over the top? Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi Freakystyley,

I know Sonic Mountain did something similar. Check out his thread at

The colour primer you use as a base depends on the colour of the flakes and the effect you are after. The base colour effects the final results, which is why manufacturers colour samples usually show the flakes over different bases. the same goes for pearls. In the past flakes were mixed with the same clear as your top coat, but theses days there are also specailty clears designed as carriers for flakes to help them lay down flatter so you don't need to use as many coats of topcoat to bury the edges of the flakes.
