As long as any kit set you have are smooth in operation, they are pretty decent 15:1 tuners. Probably the best part of the kit hardware. If only they came with decent anti-rotation screws though, rather than the pot-metal ones that shear off the moment you look at them!

Agreed. The ones I got with my TLA-1 (2018 I think) were actually 18:1.

I don't know why but it seems people have been influenced into thinking higher ratio (or is it technically lower???) tuners are bad.
Yes, you have to turn the key more times when replacing a string, but you get a much finer tuning in the end. And if you use a winder, you don't even notice the extra turns.

If its any help at all, I have a kit standard set of 6R chrome tuners with the "Bean" shaped keys that aren't going to go on anything I'm building? If you want them they're yours as it will help me de-clutter (slightly) my storage.

Ah unfortunately no. This neck isn't from a kit, I bought it separately as the neck/fingerboard were the only things I didn't feel comfortable making on my first guitar.

But, I think I have an old fixer-upper no name strat in a case around here somewhere, that I did a full hardware upgrade on a few years back. I can probably steal the tuners off that. They were pretty decent if I recall correctly.

    Good thinking guys, cheers!

That's super decent of you to offer. I think I'll be okay but what a guy!

Yeah that's another issue I forgot to mention. The ratio is 1:16 and a bit too fast for my taste. A small bump and you shoot over into sharp, then you need to wind like shit before it grabs to back it out.

These are the tuners for the record. You really do get what you pay for:

Started recording a couple demo clips and broke the g straight up. I blame the stupid locking tuners. I'll swap them over now I think.

Just in case anyone was in any doubt if I'm an idiot or not, it turns out I've had a set of high quality Gotoh 510 18:1 ratio double speed mini locking tuners that I put on a pawn shop notacaster about a decade ago and then never played again.

    God damnit.

I'll steal the electronics out of it for my next guitar I think. Fully loaded HSS EMG HZs.

Hey, not a problem. You help where you can, this forum is good for that.

Capital D D’OH! I like the sound of the EMG HSS set up, get that in a build diary!

I'll definitely be doing that, I've already got the itch to make my next complete scratch build (neck included). Just need to figure out how to buy all the extra neck/fingerboard related tools without the missus hitting the roof.

I'm planning another tele with a huge inlay on the body, some LED's, maybe 24 frets, rear cavities, strat style bridge and the aforementioned HSS config... because why not! Actually, I don't know if 24 fret and HSS will even work, I might have to extend the cutaway and draw up a custom body template.

I've finished installing the gotohs, I had to resin fill the holes left from the crappy guyker tuners and wait for that to dry. It's not great but it will do. The difference in quality is immense, I'm never going to skimp on paying for quality where it matters again.

Have tried my hand at recording some demos but struggling with software. I'll see how I go today.
