Thread: Build number (lucky) 13 - AST-1SW

Of course, I stopped to have a look at it as I was walking past today and I had a can of lemonade I was in the process of opening. I was a good step or so away but Murphy's law kicked in and three drops managed to spray right onto the back of the body. Wiped it off straight away but it looked like it was going to leave marks, so I lightly damped a cloth and ran it over the entire back and it seems to have had the added bonus of smoothing out the finish a little.

You may have a bit of that glue spot on the back sticking out from under the front of the plate. If all else fails, try a brown Sharpie pen. I bought a pack of coloured Sharpies from Amazon and I'm always using them to touch up small defects. Apply and then lightly smudge generally works well to blend it in.

I have noticed that and already checked it. The neck plate covers practically all of it. Not enough to be of a concern. There's a couple of of glue spots on the inside of the horn that I missed. I like your Sharpie idea so will give that a go.

A few more coats of tobacco brown and it's looking pretty good. Decided to start on the veneer. One coat of vintage amber and gave it a wipe over with a damp cloth to even it out. Looks pretty good for a first coat and no glue spots to be seen. I'm liking the contrast of tobacco brown to white binding to amber top.

That's looking good m0j0. I think a gloss clear will really make it come alive. Great news about the lack of glue spots on the front.

Are you still thinking of a burst on the veneer?

Never really been a huge fan of bursts and even if I were, I doubt I'd ever do a good one. I was originally thinking about doing a single coat of the brown and sanding back but some helpful comments and my fear of either the dye or the sanding going too deep quickly stopped me. I'm happy I didn't, to be honest. I don't really want too much going on with the front anyway given the pearloid pickguard. I kinda like the subtlety of the pattern with just that little bit going on at the horn.

That looks great! I did a similar style of colour contrast on my RC4 build a few years ago. The front of mine was a stain called Jarrah, which is a more orange. The black was Black Japan. What colour hardware do you have? I swapped mine out for black to help with the contrast

I love the Black Japan. Feast Watson, right? I stripped back my dining table and wiped on Black Japan over the whole thing and just gave it a few wax coats on top. I've also got an AG nearing completion that I custom made a rear cavity cover from 3mm ply and stained it with some of the Black Japan I had left over (I hate plastic on guitars).

I went with the chrome hardware. I considered the black but spent a good couple of hours scouring the web for examples of both with the colour scheme I had in mind and only slightly lent towards the chrome. I think my reasoning was that I didn't want too much contrast between various parts of the entire face. But there's always the chance somewhere down the line that I'll change my mind and swap everything out.

I do like your build. Very neat.

Yes, it's Feast Watson. Looking forward to seeing how this comes out!

Took to the headstock with a coping saw and cut out a very original design of my own working. :-p

Bastard file, less bastardy file, coarse sandpaper, finer sandpaper and a few beers later...

Hit it with a single coat of vintage amber and wiped it over with a damp cloth to smooth it out a little. Let it dry and then hit it with some steel wool to tone it down a little. Tested all this out on scrap pieces and found the oil coats will brown this a little and get it close to the colour I'm looking for (hopefully). Letting this dry for a few days before I attempt oiling.
