    Note that you end up with far less than 40 coats thickness once it's been sanded down and polished, and each coat is very thin.

    You make it sound almost like a partial exercise in foo-tilly-tea! ... but I know it's not. Such glorious finishes are not happened upon without care and effort. Puts me in mind of artisan panel-beaters when they actually really did "beat" panels and heat/quench/shrink them. Probably only get that work on Roll Royce Silver Spirit vehicles and such these days. Let me know if you know this to be untrue.
