Proof tint Japan black stain, sand it with 400 till it's only left in the pulp wood and low spots in the grain then Stan with your desired colour. P.s don't sand prior to Japan black

Now that is an idea. No other sanding? So, no timbermate either. hmmmm....perhaps I may err on the side of caution....japan brown in shellac...no prior sanding and 400grit??? Not 240?

Gotta try this...in intrigues me very much...just that black may be too much for me....the brown in the shellac will give a colour to the grain. The finish I use gives a yellow/amber hue that darkens with time.
