What's their DC resistance reading? If its very high, even changing the magnet type may not do a great deal to sweeten the sound, even though the output is lower. But if its in the 6-8k ohm area, it could make a decent improvement. But still worth a try as you really need to discover these things for yourself. There's only so much you can gain from other people's descriptions. And even if you don't use the Alnico magnets now, you have them for later.

I get all of my single coil pick up parts from tonekraft and I have to say the quality is nothing less than stellar.

Interesting. I suppose there is always going to be some people who have a good run and some who have a poor run. I haven't tried getting anything from there yet just because of being cautious. Maybe I'll grab some stuff from there soon and see how I go.

This guitar building lark is getting complicated 🤪 great post and brilliant tip about phase checking. I can see upgrading my electronics on the horizon, at the moment it’s very much suck it and see!

This hand held tensioner has been a bit of a lifesaver for me too Woltz. Very much a must have if you intend to wind humbuckers.

Haha yeh at the moment my tensioner is basically a big peg with felt on the faces that clamp together.

It was a preferred addition when winding single coils but it wasn't until I got to winding humbuckers that I really needed the tension. Its damn hard getting 500 winds on a bobbin.

If I was to make a couple sets of single coil toaster style pickups would there be any interest?

Due to not wanting to be sued by Rickenbacker they would have one of the other deArmond designed covers.

But if you wanted the toaster covers you could source a set which would fit.

So I was given an USB Oscilloscope as an early B'Day gift. I picked up a cheap signal generator off eBay (which initially didn't work, the IC was stuffed, but got a new IC from Jaycar and it started working straight away).

Set up to test inductance of the Tonerider TRT1 Neck Pickup which measures:

    6.62k
    2.27H

It's a bit of a mess of wires but essentially it is set up to create a Lissajous Figure.

Here is a link for anyone interested: https://www.syscompdesign.com/wp-con...ar-pickups.pdf

Once I've wound a driver coil I'll set everything up to try to find the resonant peak. Unfortunately this cheap oscilloscope and signal generator combo means that I don't have a bode plotter so I'll have to look at the signal instead as I vary the frequency on the signal generator.
