But my dad was Canadian and I worked on a lot of US based cars in my teens and early 20's, so sometimes I can't help describing things in imperial. The advantage is that it make rough conversion from one to the other in your head pretty easy.....
I was reading a guitar building book in which the author would switch between metric and imperial depending on what he was measuring. I understand convention can dictate use of one system over the other.
