    I have used same colour with water based inks but a lot stronger concentration as a first coat then wiped off as much as possible 24 hours later with a slightly damp rag, then applied lighter slightly diluted colour over that. End result is that where darker bits remained from 1st coat come out darker once 2nd coat is applied.

    Edit: Front is Flame Maple, back is Basswood and due to nature of various planks used it is really hard to POP basswood as evidenced in rear shots taken on same day...
