Thread: Tuff Dog Tele

  1. #161
Looks great Dave.. I think with those colors the easiest way to do the burst is with an airbrush or small detail spray gun and that is not for everyone. I love that color on the quilt and I wouldn't be upset with that at all.. isn't it such fun when you have all of these plans and think that it is going to work out only to find out that the guitar has a plan of its own.. I have learned that the hard way on my first build which is also a quilted tele..
    Cheers

I've tried using DT in my airbrush kit, but it came out terrible, and I had an oily mist fill up my shed.

BTW, I think the CG looks fantastic!

Thanks for the CG comment and the other about the airbrush should go in the DT or finishing sub forum to make it easier to search

I was thinking about this and if sprayed, it's not going to penetrate the wood - you aren't there with a cloth pushing it into the grain. So if (with the right thinning) you can get it to spray, it will just sit on top of the existing DT finish, rather like adding DT to wood that's been sanded to 2000 grit smoothness. You might then be able to spray a few layers of Tru-Oil on (rather than rub or brush), which might possibly hold it on, but there's a good chance that it won't take well over the sprayed DT and could peel off when you come to sand the Tru-Oil flat.

Yep, exactly this! It did not penetrate at all, and because it stays wet, it can easily run.

I had done two applications of intensifier to the Dog and the BS was very patchy so I gave the back and sides a good sand with 1000 yesterday and applied a 3rd intensifier and its come up a treat.

Also put the first coat of clear DT neck finish on, a bit of a surprise when I poured it out and saw a faint purple colour

The BS has gone patchy again so not sure where to next.

Just out of interest, what sort of temp and humidity have been around during application and drying? Any large changes in conditions?
    Scott.
