Hi Gav, somehow I has missed this thread and glad that you decided to drop the chrome covers as they are a right proper PIA when playing, particularly that neck PUP cover. On my Ric the first thing I did was remove the bridge PUP cover as it was right it the spot where you want to play.

Whilst the chrome covers are very 50's retro I reckon it looks better naked. They play so much better that way too and string changing is much quicker and easier.

Looks like I'm the only one around who does like covers, especially the bridge "ashtray" ones. I find them a great place to rest the heel of your hand - and I love the look. The neck pickup cover can be a great place to anchor yourself when playing fingerstyle but it only works if you don't move your hand around too much. I wouldn't - and don't - have them on all my basses, but most of the P and J style ones do have a bridge cover, and one has the neck cover. That said, I definitely understand the consensus against them as they can be a pain depending on how you play. The string changing point is valid too but I so rarely change strings it doesn't bother me!
    Completed Builds: #1 TL-1 "Telemaster" (GOTM Oct 2016); #2 The "Maplecaster" scratch build; #3 JB-4 "Bass IV" (co-winner GOTM Jan 2017); #4 ST-1M "Surfcaster" (GOTM Apr 2017), #5 JZA-1 "EC Deluxe"

Andy, go for the bass dude - you know you want to!!

I finally got this bad boy assembled and wired up today. I love the colour, and she's making a very clean boomp - boomp sound; especially from the neck pickup. Can you tell I'm not a bass player?? Man I love the ease with which these F-type kits go together though. 4 wires soldered, and everything is done. Magic. I still have to do a fret level, a re-crown, and adjust the height of the nut, but to be honest she's playing quite nicely already.

    cheers,
    Gav.

Thanks Wokks. I'm still not sure about the covers, but I do like how she looks without them.

    cheers,
    Gav.
