used a similar technique on this walking stick sword ( it was originally a plain black painted stick sword but I wanted something more like Zatoichi used in the blind swordsman films)

haha Ponch, I think the moisture in the soil would totally ruin the basswood, Dedman seems to have the technique sorted

copper covers for the switch cavity and the trem cavity, done. This is just thin copper sheet wrapped over the existing plastic covers. If you heat copper then drop it in a bucket of water it becomes soft, I did most of the bending here with my fingers then just tapped the edges with a plastic hammer to close the fold. They are now soaking in a mild solution of cold gun blue. Cold blue makes copper go a warm charcoal black, its a delicate finish on non-ferrous metals so it will need a clear matt coat on it. Of course if you use it on steel it goes blue/black and is quite tough.

you can even sponge it Wokka. I did the habaki (collar) on this katana with a couple of dabs on a sponge (this is on brass)
