Hey the black dots on my neck were approx. 5mm diameter so i punched out 6mm inlays from the guitar picks, i then put a piece of tape on my diamant router bit as a visual aid for depth.
The black dots are plastic so quite soft compared to the maple (cant speak for rosewood or ebony) so i found the easiest thing to do wasbremove the black pkastic to the desired depthvthen gently widen the hole a bit usong thebrotational force of the router (guide it don't fight it)
Once the hole is big enough that you can gently hammer the new inlay into it all you have to do is pry it out again i used a stanley knife blade point. Add some multi purpose (less is more) contact glue to the hole and hammer it back in.
Theb sand smooth and let the dust from the sanding fill any small cracks.
And most of all be very very patient dont try to rush it.
