Hi Juddernaut, it is basswood, the grain is generally pretty plain but sometimes you get a nice surprise when you sand then stain it.
Staining will be easier than solid paint so I would order a Dingotone kit. Would pay to put a coat of black stain or ebony timbermate over it before you stain it the colour you want will pop the grain more.
Good luck. Let us know what stain colour you would favour ?
    Current Builds and status
scratch end grain pine tele - first clear coat on !
    JBA-4 - assembled - final tweaks
Telemonster double scale tele - finish tobacco burst on body and sand neck

    Completed builds
scratch oak.rose gum Jazzmaster - assembled needs setup
    MK-2 Mosrite - assembled - play in
Ash tele with Baritone neck - neck pup wiring tweaks and play in

I am thinking a butterscotch stain, if such a thing exists Wokka. I am not sure what you mean when talking about staining it black. Do I just put a light coat on and then sand it all back or something?
