That's a bit unfair as they probably came out of the same factory. Mine just ended up with a distributor on the East Coast who I felt sorry for when hearing about his closing down sale.

As the pressure is off through not being able to enter GOTM I will just take my time. Being build # 4 it only gets easier after learning from all the mistakes made on earlier ones.

No point feeling sorry for myself......maybe Ads may see this thread and feel charitable enough but fully understand if not as it would open the floodgates and where do you draw the line.

Did some wet sanding with 2000 grit on this and the Tele last night and whilst not going at it too hard still managed to sand through in a couple of places on both, even after 6 - 8 coats of TO. Here is a shot taken in full sunlight this morning once wiped down and before applying another stain coat to cover up the area where it started going back to bare timber.

I reckon my PRS came out of the same factory too. The publicity shot was identical to the one PBG were using at the time.

Hey Waz, I reckon we should make a 'Non PBG guitar of the month' thread when we finish our bastard builds. I'm still ages away from finishing too - I've only just put the second intensifier coat on tonight and the neck has hit a hurdle.

BTW, your fountain pen ink look the duck's nuts!

I had about 15 coats of TO on mine before i started sanding my Baritone.

Heres a note from my build diary at the time, about 7 years ago.

Today i have sanded back the sealer with 220grit then to 320 to 400 to 600 to 800 grit until the surface was smooth as glass. I then vacuumed with a light brush head and washed the body with naptha, and did its 1st coat of tru oil. Tomorrow a sand back with 0000 synthetic steel wool and another coat of tru oil. Will decide how many coats when i get to around 15.

A word on the synthetic steel wool, although its very good you need to rub back with "000" instead of "0000" the latter is a bit finer than actual "0000"steel wool. The "0000" still works a treat for bringing up a nice smooth surface.

10 coats done, i am about 1/2 way, will decde after another 5 coats how we are travelling.

10 coats and a quick mock up, needs a rub back and go again, will check it out at 15 coats and make my mind up then

I am also doing this now for the first rub back, i use the "000" first then the "0000"

15th and final coat done now, i have to wait a week or two for it to fully cure then its 6000 grit, then 8000 grit, then finish off with 12000 grit just gently rubbing over the surface each pass of the sandpapers, this should bring up a nice shine. A light wiping quality lemon oil lightly applied to the finish after all the sanding will prevent finger prints on the finished surface.

Thanks Muzza, you must have been reading my mind about the non PBG GOTM idea however reckon it should be an annual GOTY thread as there may not be as many builds on the go each month.

Each time a top coat is added on this build it is like being at a wet T-shirt competition for timber with all the word porn grain and colour interacting with each other.

Only colour I have used straight out of a bottle is the DT CG on my EX-1, all others have had some degree of experimentation done in order to dial in the right colour. Highly recommend fountain pen ink as some part of a colour scheme as it is so easy to use and readily blends with any other water based stain or dye.
