After a lot of sanding I managed to get pretty much everything out and back to fairly normal, might have to try and stain the body again though. Luckily the top wasn't damaged, just the back of the body/sides.
There's teeth marks and a gravel rash sort of thing where it has been dragged, nothing too drastic though.
I'll try the wet cloth/iron thing and see if that helps at all. Thanks for all the advice guys, really appreciated!
