I know a lot of folks use Keda dies, and you get colors to mix with alcohol or water from them. I tried them recently mixed with shellac, and they seemed to stain (or, I guess it was technically a tint) well. I ended up not using them but that was more about a lack of satisfaction with the colors I was getting than with the quality of the dies. More about how I should have been paying more attention to the "color wheel" instruction in art classes long, long ago ;-) I have seen people using RIT clothing dies, but I don't know how available those are in Australia.
RIT dye is readily available in Australia - I know "Spotlight" stocks both powder and liquid dyes.
I've used it - and while I admit I'm a novice in it, I think that you really need to take into consideration what colour the wood is to start with as that will have a great effect of the final colour.....

I've never used Keda dyes but I'm imagining they would be the same as RIT dyes (?).

With Shellac - I have recently come across a number of website where they tint the shellac with alcohol based Inks.... or stain the wood with a mix of ink and "Metho" (denatured alcohol).... but the shellac seems to be what Dongotone was trying to be.........

Another option Ive come across is to mix in some artist colour with the oil you use (Danish Oil or Tru Oil etc).
