    Question First build DGM-3F

I’m an absolute beginner at guitar builds (although I’ve pulled one apart before ha ha) and I’m trying to take this slowly and methodically against my usual suck it and see policy.

First thing I noticed was this step in the neck where it joins to the body? I have never seen this sort of step/gap before and while I was expecting to do some minor sanding maybe to get the neck in position, if I were to cut that step/gap back that seems a bit more than minor sanding. Am I missing something fundamental about why this is here? Or should I just go ahead and cut it back so everything sits flush against each other.

Sorry if this is a really dumb question- I’ve tried in vain to find a finished build of this to see what it looks like but (maybe I’m still working out the search function for the forums ha ha)

    Thanks,
    Nick

    Hi and welcome Nick.

I have not done this kit, but the tongue part of the neck also looks wrong to me. Also, it does not represent the picture of the kit on the PB web page. I also cannot find a similar build diary - but I'm sure I have seen one!

Don't cut it back! I would use the scale length for the high e string area to see where the neck must be positioned to achieve the 628 mm scale length. This should at least let you know if it is the step that needs to be removed.

    Additional:

Looking at the SG-1 photos, which also have the set neck, they have the same type of neck tongue.

Check out https://www.buildyourownguitar.com.a...ll=1#post43053. But there is not a finished purple guitar!!

Also the SG-1F Photos at https://www.buildyourownguitar.com.a...ll=1#post75436. They have a small cover between the neck and the pup!!

    I'm lost!

I think the two models are based on different sg’s I went and checked my Gibson and it has a cover above the pickup surround. So if the guitar can be as Trevor indicated setup for scale length there may be a cover in the kit parts or wouldn’t be hard to knock one up.
