nice looking kit Frankie, so is this a custom Pitbull kit ? only the neck pocket routed, did you shape the headstock ? looks great !
Nice mix of hardware you have.
Are you planning rear or front control cavity ?
This was a the muffed custom thinline kit Ads threw on special a while back.
Plan is, nude finish with clear DT
Rear rout controls 1v, 1T with a push pull to split the bridge HB, three pos toggle.
Rear rout pup cavities with adjustment from the back through a custom rear cover.
Schaller Hannes 6 black bridge, string through body
Gotoh black SG 381 tuning heads
Graphtec nut
SD Al Nico 2 SC and HB ( recycles from the FrankenWashie)
Surely you will not hide all that lovely Ash grain under a black stain?
Also like the look of headstock shape too.
Ahhh, missed that bit.
Just saw all the black hardware and jumped to the wrong conclusion.
Does that include the safety flip-flops?
I'm lucky that I can say things without doing all the full imagination stuff as well. :D
So this one stalled due to Disasters with stain and disasters with work. While other things are being base coated, sanded and left to cure I finally made some progress with it.
I decided it was no use longing after a drill press, so I made do with my little drill a ma jig thingy and set to work fitting the funky Hannes 6 Schaller Bridge.

It all turned out okay apart from a couple of the Ferrule holes being a wee bit wonky, a product of the wobbly nature of the Drill guide i was using. (Oh for a 1.5 HP 16speed pedestal drill!)
Attachment 19578
Everything seems to have lined up okay, despite the ferrule holes, and they won't be seen under the string end anchor anyway.

though I will need to do some minor fill work where the router didn't play nice on the anchor recess (Positive abutment stops are much preferred to indicative stops for those playing at home).
The string alignment seems good though i did realise that i hadn't thought about string trees for this one, and I can see i'm definitely going to need them! The scale length 1st -12th match the 12th to Bridge on both E's so Im fairly happy about that.

Now i just need to finish marking out the routs and set up some templates, then punch a bunch of holes in it.
Here's hoping the DT behaves itself on this one.
I'm more worried about the drastic body routing i have planned to be honest Waz. All of my issues thus far with the DT have been self inflicted for one reason or another.
Yeah, routers can be scary things. I don't own one but remember using my dad's Black & Decker one when I was a teenager (last century) and had lots of fun but lacked the precision that comes with over exuberant youthfulness.
Could use one on the upcoming MMB build as I need to cut a battery box in the back and will probably just drill multiple holes to the right depth and gently chisel it out instead.
A nice assortment of grain patterns in that body Franken, it should look a treat done nude (and yes I do mean the tele body). I am hearing you about the drill press, I too have been agonising over that purchase for a few months now. I think next weeks pay might have to become a sacrifice to the industrial revolution happening in my shed. Like all your builds I will be watching this one very closely.
It never ends does it, there is always another next toy, God bless it.
A good router is a must have... get the Bosch if the budget allows..
Or a Festool OF1400; woodworkers best router ;)
I've used a normal tabletop drill stand to drill nice straight-through holes for a Telecaster bridge. Obviously a tabletop stand doesn't have a very deep throat to it, so I adjusted it so that I actually drilled down through the hole in the base whist resting it on the top (or bottom) of the guitar. Harder to see where the drill is positioned when doing it this way, so you need to take care, but it is do-able and better than drilling by hand.
Yes I have plans afoot for a proper floor mounted pedestal drill, but all I have at this point is a drill guide like this one:Attachment 19615
It's okay for general stuff but it is very limited, and there is a fair amount of angular play side to side and fore and aft. This is the reason the g string boring went out of line, though it will all be hidden by the anchor plate.
G string boring went out of line??? For a moment there I had to re-check which website I was on.
OH my that was a good one Waz .. I am still laughing..
Boom tish...
WazKelly Ladies and gentlemen, he's here all week, try the tofu dogs....
At any rate, the FrankenLab got drowned in the sound of routing today.

Bear in mind the entire exercise here is a bit of an experiment. I simply wanted to see if it is possible to mount the pickups with no visible bolts or screws from the face of the guitar. All of the adjustment is going to be from the rear <There you go Waz, another avenue for double entendres awaits>.
There is one more bout of template making to achieve what i am shooting for, and that is a recess to sit the mounting rings for the pick ups themselves and the recess for the cover for the whole thing (for this exercise, both of the rear covers will be black plastic with a satin finish). I think you can kind of see form the photo below what i'm shooting for.

Thoughts? Comments? Angry mob with pitchforks and torches?
No hooded klan folk required....all good.....not such a bad idea if it works and looks clean from above.
Tofu dogs??? What the.... are they similar to dagwood dogs or pluto pups which are also known as s#!t on a stick?
Well the standard line is "Try the Veal" but that's not PC these days...
Never heard of that expression before? Probably best not try and explain on a PG rated forum I suppose.
so we have made a little progress, a weekend spent making routing templates, figuring stuff out, stuffing stuff up and making the best of it.

edit: can someone tell me how to delete the attached image? I didn't want that one there.
edit@: Thanks WazKelly, i couldn't figure it out and it was making me nuts.
When you click 'Edit' it shows which images are attached and from there you can delete if required.
a very interesting build look forward to see him finished
Looking good to me. What's the plan for the Strat pickup mounting? Fix a metal or plastic plate in the cavity with a couple of mounting holes drilled in it?
Frankenlab seems to be working well FW. nice job so far
Spot on Simon. I am going to prep two plate versions in different materials, 3mm brass plate and 3mm 6AL4V Titanium, the plate will mount both PUPS and secure to that middle section with flush mount screws.
I thought the brass would provide some good resonance and the Titanium is to hold down the weight if the brass is too heavy. ( and cause I though it would just be cool!)
With a 3mm thick plate of either brass or titanium in that relatively small size of cavity, I doubt you'd get much resonance from either, especially if firmly screwed against the wood which will damp it. But it will be a nice firm fixing for the pups.
