RC4A 'the binned guitar'
This one has had a difficult birth so far......... it ended up in the bin after a horrid experience trying to clearcost over Dingotone.... operator error nothing wrong with the Dingotone!
Rescued it in the middle of the night and spent over 4 hours with a razor blade and sandpaper taking it back to bare timber.
Feast Watson black and jarrah with 10 thin coats of poly. Another week and it should be ready for polishing.
Cut for double humbuckers.

MMM would have been a shame to have left it in the bin Mate, it looks as though you are bringing it back though. Nice gloss coming up on the face.
-
Thanks! Managed to get it back to bare timber with only a few small scars on the back. Looking forward to getting it together in a few weeks!
-
That operator error on Dingtone is a killer first time up. I went too heavy with the intensifier coats and it turned to poo. I also had to sand all the way back to bare wood and start again. Its a learning experience. :)
-
Glad it wasn't just me! I have seen some wonderful finishes with Dingotone, so I can be done, and regularly! I'll try it again on my next one...
-
It is far from just you bud, there has been a wide range of mishaps, some due to the I D 10 T interface (as in my case), some due to weather and humidity conditions, some due to old batches. There has also been some stunning guitar finishes.
So far patience and care is the overiding factor it seems, that and kind conditions.
-
Same as any finish I guess. Do love the smell of the Dingotone though!
-
Btw, I was planning on letting the poly set for a couple of weeks then hitting it with 2000 grit wet, what polishing paste do people use with a polyurethane finish?
-
Mate, that looks great, I'm glad you rescued it from the bin!
I had a similar experience with the DT final coat. Reckon I put too much on, didn't wait long enough between coats, and the weather was too cool and wet. Fixed it by carefully rubbing it back to just the stain/intensifier and then using Tru Oil. I reckon I'll try an all-DT finish again over summer now that I have a better idea of what I'm doing.

Nice save, I like your attitude in trying to save it, you have and will learn a lot from it . It looks good and your next will be even better for it
-
Thanks Stan! I couldn't let it go, although you should have seen it! The finish and stain were rock solid, lumpy and crazed..... I didn't think it would come off without ruining it completely.
Hoping to get a really nice shine on it, and the couple of flaws in it will add character!
Best wishes

Ok so today I just did a quick mock up of the parts. The pickup mounts and control cover I laser cut from cast acrylic at work. Humbuckers are cheapies from eBay, but they look well made and have reasonable magnets.
Still a week or two before I can polish it and start assembly.

Yeah mate, thats moving along nicely now. I like the oversize PUP Rings and how it all ties together in a really simple form with the bridge. Nice and clean, interesting looking PUPs too. Nice work!
-
Nice save this is going to come up a treat

Certainly is looking great

Absolutely love that control cover layout - super nice.
-
Wow Andy great job, a really modern take on this classic, love it
-
For such a large control cover the knobs and switch are very close. Have you thought about spreading them out more?
-
Yes, I just threw them on there. There's also a 3 way switch to go in there too. Ideally it would be smaller, but the hole underneath is big... haven't drilled the holes yet.

Just polished up the face. Came up nice and glassy, although there are still a few tiny pits. Can't complain after what it looked like at one stage.....!

SHIIIIIINYYYY! You have to be happy with where you've taken this one Andy. That's a great save all up and that gloss, well,
I know I'm repeating myself here, but .....SHIIIIIINYYY!!!
-
nice one Andy whatever you did it looks great !
that plastic nut looks very high so will need the slots lowered or bottom of nut sanded

Thank you! It's a polyurethane clear.
You are probably right re the nut Wokka, I'll try the strings that came with it on when I get it together, and work from there. A nice brass nut would suit it I think?
Bit more work while watching the Lego Movie with my son....

looking good Andy, yes a bone or brass nut will make it play much nicer for sure. Also the bridge saddle heights are probably different to the kit supplied bridge so you will have some setup tweaking to do
-
Yes I think the bridge saddle heights are too high. I'm planning on having to grind a little off of the bottom of them to allow them to sit lower in their slots, but I'll get some strings on it and get it up to tension and let it sit for a few days first.

come up a treat Andy well done, do both pickups work ok and you got any hum ?
lots of setup but should play well after that
-
Actually the setup isn't too bad. The bridge is not great, it doesn't have the necessary range of adjustment so I will have to adapt it by filing down the base of the adjusters which cannot be seen when fitted.
I think the 5th fret is high and buzzes on the e and a strings between frets 2-4. The bow on the neck looks pretty good, it is close to straight with a slight concave bow. I haven't measured exactly what this bow is, but I don't have the specs for this neck, does anyone?
The intonation was pretty good straight out of the box which was nice.
I'll fiddle with the bridge and play it a bit before doing anything too drastic.
No buzzes or hums from the electrics, but some wonderful tones through my guitar amp! Will look forward to wheeling out the SVT sometime over the holidays,,,

Very nice work. Just take the last steps in a steady manner and you'll get there.
