RCA-4 Lemmy tribute....
Hi there!
so Ive ordered an RCA-4 kit and it arrived in the states early this AM. Should be getting started by next weekend. I have big plans for this kit, and will try to document every step. It will be my first bass, my first from a kit, but not my first time in the rodeo..lol. Looking forward to sharing my build as it happens!

Hello all! My kit arrived yesterday, but nobody was home, so I picked it up today! I am very impressed with the quality of the kit. Neck fits like a glove, with just enough play.. everything seems to be there. I laid it all out on the bench and I can picture my finished product... I'm debating on going with a different bridge, but thinking I may just stick with this one for now.... Im waiting on some checkered binding to come in.. seems a shame to route out the beautiful cream that's on there, but the check, inside of cream, is a must-have! Already finished my TRC logo...Attachment 8982

Exciting stuff, and like your logo.
-
Excellent Davey!! I wonder how you did the logo, because im trying to figure out how to make mine...Nice start anyway...
-
nice one Davey, love the TRC logo. Should look great with the chequered binding. So what's the plan you will have chequered on the inside and cream on the outside ? so a wider binding channel needed ?
-
-
Thanks everyone..
sansan, thats just a scanned image of the TRC, in Adobe Illustrator.. I will probably print the logo onto waterslide decal paper. Thats how Ive done them on past builds..
wokkaboy, exactly the plan. Ill need to route a wider channel. Im waiting on the binding to arrive so I can double (triple) check the measurements.. then Ill install new cream on the outside..
-
Ahh ok, thanks davey...This is the one i thought or maybe find the way to stamp a transparent sheet printed logo onto white pickguard material or White plastic.
-
I have a friend who does custom engraving. Hes done some small aluminum plates for me in the past, that were black, and the engraving was obviously silver. Im wondering if he could take my illustrator vector file, and engrave through the white top layer of a white-black-white piece of pickguard.... hmmmm... food for thought...

Hi Davey
I made my trussrod cover the way you described - only I did it with a dremel myself. If you scroll through the build diaries and find my RC-4 diary you can take a look. Used it on my MMB-4 also which was GOTM winner last december.

Hello..
So I started working on "Kilmister One" today.. I am now wavering on messing with the binding.. I can still do it on the table router, but I dont know yet..lol. I laid everything out, got the neck and bridge positions measured and marked, and the body marked for carving. I have ideas for a wooden humbucker ring as well as a flush mounted, wooden control cavity cover.
I am past the point of no return! I learned something today.. .. Don't route out the boundaries of your carving areas before you carve.. seemed like a good idea until I slipped across the channel with the dremel and took a few nice chunks out of the side that isnt supposed to have any chunks out! I think I have an idea to fix that though...stay tuned for that. The carving is going fairly well. Im doing a combination of hand gouges and dremel. I started by drawing a pencil outline on the wood and engraving it in with the dremel, then went to town on it. I really wasnt sure until I got going.. now, I'm pretty happy. I still have a ton of shaping and smoothing to do, but it's getting there! I didnt want to do a Lemmy replica, but wanted to tribute HIM as well as his Ric... Enjoy the pics... more work tomorrow!!
Dave

Great job mate, its looking pretty good.

Hi all... I have been working like crazy on the bass every chance I get. Ive been taking pictures, I just have to resize them to post.. The carvings are done.. I ended up using the black and white binding stuff (which is more like purfling), to fix the chunks I took out of the edges.. Im glad I did. It looks really sharp! I did some stain tests in the cavities and chose my stains. I am leaving the neck natural, with a Behr Tung oil based, wipe on varnish.. Its smooth as heck, and satiny-low /gloss. Sand, sand sand and the front is stained! I had a bit of a setback today.. Im a moron, and assumed that Id be able to scrape any stain off of the binding... the cream was a piece of cake, but not so much with the black and white stuff. I ended up removing it (pain in the a$$!!). In doing that, I put a couple scratches in the field of wood around the edge.. soooo.. sanded the areas back, scratches out, re-stain, move on. I replaced the binding stuff, and made my flush-mount, walnut cavity cover. It started as a 3/4"(19mm) thick board.. thank god I have a thickness planer at work! I got it to about 3-4 mm, and it fits perfectly flush with the top... the pictures will make sense of what I just said..lol. I also made my pickup ring from the same planed piece of walnut... Next, I will move on to the edges, which will be stained black. Ill probably sand the back some more, and then I am creating a new "color" for the back. I will explain that when I post pics! Lol...
Stay tuned..
Dave

I may try to go darker on the walnut cavity cover.. believe it or not, that is the same stain as the dark parts of the body....
-
Thanks Tony... vh, Im honestly not sure what it is... I saw it on Ebay, and it was close to what I wanted, but different, and the price was right....

So as I was saying about the back.... my new color is called "Ozzie-a$$ Brindle Burst"... my dog, a pitbull named Ozzie, has this really cool, dark brindle blob on her rear... thought it was fitting... pitbull guitars from Australia and all.....so the black edge, will blend into a pattern of different stains, hopefully resembling mmy pup's butt!..LOLAttachment 9203

wow Davey I've missed this diary for almost a week, the build is coming along really nicely, it will look pretty similar to Lemmy's RC for sure. Keep up the good work !
-
awesome tribute there Davey, super nice work
-
Nice job Davey...I've tried to find some purfley binding but all i can see was very pricey.
REally love your work...:o

Noice!
It's always worth extra points when the builder has a Pittie :)
I have a Staffordshire Pit Bull, brainless animal but makes up for her lack of intelligence with a massive personality :p

They are the best dogs for kids!
Before a#seholes decided to make them vicious, they were known as the "nanny" dog..
I also believe that an Amastaff was the first service dog in WWI to be decorated for bravery for alerting its platoon of a sneak attack and then launching in and attacking!
My Staffy is only 12" tall, a runt compared to most.
When she was about six months old she went this idiot that tried to attack me when we were on our morning walk...
He had his dog off leash in an on leash area and it rushed over to attack my girl.
I gave it a quick boot in the butt and it backed off.
Idiot owner decided he wanted to punch on...
I damned near wet myself laughing, she came out from behind my legs and latched onto his ankle :)
Between fits of laughter I advised him to p#ss off before I joined in... Needless to say he made the right decision.
That is the only time I have ever seen her being aggro towards a human.
As for kids, she just wants to play with them and try to lick them to death.... There is nothing quite as intense as Staffy love...
-
Lol.. yep.. great dogs. Lots of bad owners. Ozz is definitely a people dog.. not so much a dog dog though...

Saffron is fine with other dogs, just as long as they don't have an attitude towards her...
We have a Boxer Pointer cross as well as a Dingo and all three get along just fine.
