Back in the Man Cave, slowly getting the vibe for the tools again..

Got some beautiful palm planes in to carve the top on the '59 LP build, so busy getting used to using and sharpening tiny plane blades.. Love 'em!

So rather than hook in and run the risk of self induced touretts, I have been playing around with a few PBG kits that needed some minor tweaks.

A JB4 body ASH! with the mankyest pocket rout in history.
JB4L neck, headstock was on a strange tilt....

Neck fits body perfectly..... Hmmmmmmmmmm..... What to do??..............

Steam Punk it, of course.

Purists will hate me, but I am ok with that :p

This Bass features the Overlord of Music bridge...

I forgot to add that the heel of the neck was convex......
So into the routing jig to flatten it.
Whilst I was at it I machined a slight break angle.. No idea on the angle, it was a case of set it up in jig, tap the butt end down and machine resulting angle......
It is Steam Punk afterall:p

I do alot of metal detecting, relics and gold, i have stuff here the steam punk artists would go crazy for.

Will the lack of weight end of the neck make it body heavy when using a strap?

It is heavy... For now...
The Ash body is quite meaty, add the Overlord and it becomes rather bum heavy..... Better that than the gubson neck dive :p

well you won't know how it sits untill you put the strap pins on. With the heavy bridge it might end up being an upright bass on a strap haha
where is the truss rod adjustment in this neck - nut or heel end ? If it was at the nut end how did the new headless fitting go on ?

EDIT - what's the bet the very first thing you did was rip the frets out ?

Looking great already DB. Can we get a close up shot of that nut end of the fretboard? Would be very interested if you could explain the setup a bit more, it's all alien to me. I guess the strings are threaded from the nut end? Looking forward to more steampunkedness.

No worries Gav.

The headpiece acts as both nut and string clamp. (Under normal circumstances, the slots would sit on top of the fingerboard)

To string up, start at the bridge end.
Back the string retainer off until the ball end holderer is exposed.
Push ball end in half way!

Then tread string through hole, getting as much tension as possible and tighten grub screw. Do not over tighten!!!
The string clamps will hold the strings securely.

It is wise to leave a decent length on the string at this point.
As you tune up, you may have to loosen the grub screw and pull some more string through.

Tune up with knobs, refer to above if you run out of travel.... :p

cool nice explanation DB, I had no idea how a headless bridge and nut retainer worked.

how much fun was it cutting the headstock off ?

I still need therapy for cutting the neck in half for your clock hahah

nice one DB, is that karijini red or uluru red ? I didn't initially notice the carve for the overlord tuning knobs.

@ Woks. A new colour I am testing. This colour was a custom order, customer was looking for a Rosewood shade and I reckon I pretty well nailed it..

@BassGuy. There should be a few new prototypes requiring your expert critique, o Maestro :)

I saw the pic before I saw this post, You have nailed it DB!

DB looks great but in the photo looks like a cross between uluru and karijini, needs more brown for rosewood. Maybe it looks browner in the flesh
Also worried the neck in the pic looks wide enough for a 3 stringer haha

Good quality Indian Rosewood is more of a red/purple colour.
The Rosewood fretboards on PBG necks are most probabably plantation timber.
Takes a good few years for the tree to mature and colour up so most readily available Rosewood is more of a brown/ red shade.

fair enough DB, I google imaged rosewood colour and got a fair variation in colour.
Should look sweet with the rosewood neck.
Not good looks like Aussies will lose the first ODI against the Kiwis ! (holds head in shame haha)

It isnt BG you need to watch out for there DB, I'm already sitting outside your door!

It needs more apparatus to be really steam punk, loads of things that don't actually do anything. I used to do quite a bit of steampunk art, love the style.
