G'day all, finally made a start on the sale kits. Why not start on a shape that was my first build. Had to go a stain as this body has fantastic grain. A rocking shape in the explorer has to be black, probably no pickguard. Here's the first coat

Next step was to glue blackheart sassafras to the headstock and made the grain on the angle of the headstock. Gave it a lighter black shade so you can still the grain. Got a bit of tidying up around the truss rod entry.
Stain is FW black

Looks amazing mate. Did you grain fill or will to fill the pores in the ash?
-
cheers Andrew, didn't bother grain filling, I don't mind seeing the pores. I'll post some pics tomoz after first clear coat
-
Ok sweet. And is it tru-oil? Why is it such a no no?
-
Hey Andrew, I'm about to put first coat of tru oil on, DB doesn't like it as it probably kills the natural wood tones a bit and can have long term problems, but time will tell. He's not a fan of high gloss axes as well
-
Ok cool. How does the dt clear go? As your the only one I know that's used it, I'm looking for something that will fill grain after charting the body and sanding back. Timber mate seems to hold up pretty well but the top sort of pits with the heat. Sorry to hijack your thread.

Looks amazing Wokka. I agree with all your choices here - much prefer to see the texture in the Ash grain myself, and the black stain goes so flamin well with it. The effect is just amazing! I'm guessing you won't be able to get a truly glossy finish with the TO due to all the grain? I'm doing an Ash Tele myself in exactly the same way and that seems to be how it's playing out. Anyway, great work dude and I can't wait to see the final results!
cheers,
Gav.

I hafta agree with GT's comments.
I reckon this beast looks intimidating already . . . .

been a busy weekend, after a week of curing got it polished, mock build with the Entwistle dark star pups and neck glued lastnight so should be ok to wire up this arvo. Love it when 2 or 3 builds get close to completion, the excitement of plugging it into the amp for the first time. Neck was level so neck was easy to setup

Thats very nice Woks. Are you going to upgrade your pickups?
-
I loved this axe right from the word go and now even more so. Freakin' unreal Wokka!

cheers for the comments fellas.
@ Tony I've put Entwistle Dark star pups in and early days they sound great. Pretty high resistance neck pup is about 15.2k and bridge almost 15.5k
Got the wiring done yesterday and strung up. Neck needs some truss rod adjustment and need to sort out bridge height and nut height but sounds pretty good with no setup.
Bought some Meguiars polish and its paid off.
Luckily I checked the scale length before I glued the neck, had to cut about 5mm off the neck heel and fingerboard. You can imagine how nervous I was cutting a finished neck on the bandsaw. The nut to 12th fret is 313mm and out of the box with the saddle wound forward the low E string was about 322mm, so the heel had to be shortened. I have about 3mm of fingerboard past the 22nd fret - close one !

Ok Wokks, replying here as requested.
Black should be your hot and green is your ground, as per this. But, having them reversed wouldn't cause the volume issue. You can check the polarity of the pickup using your multimeter, as shown in this video.
I suspect the volume issue could be the ground lug on the volume pot, just double-check it's got a good connection to ground. Post some pics if you can't find the issue.
-
cheers heaps Scott, since Gav Turner posted that link on FB of the wire colours.
Good point I'll check the volume ground connection
