DB to the rescue! It's certainly a fiddly problem. I think you made the right decision.

Build is up and running again - the bridge fits now. It's a little too snug right now, so it's difficult to get the bridge low enough - needs to come down about a mm or two for the action to improve. The bridge is a couple of mm off the body.
The neck is set. The angle of the neck on the stock kit was a little off meaning the angle near the bridge was way too high., I corrected it with some masking tape (about 3 layers) underneath the neck.
Going to start working on the circuit now. Seems like it will be four push pull pots, one rotary switch and one kill switch.
Pics later tonight as I'm work posting right now :)
Some pics of DB's handy work once the bridge is on. Coloured over the dowels or whatever they're called with the blue. You wouldn't know it's there! The colour in the pics is off because that's a yellow light in the background
Neck set. String action is now great (bridge required a little more persuasion ;) )
Gotta enlarge the holes - can't find any of my drill bits. Gonna go see wokka if I can for a chat/some help in that regard - buying the bits I need for this one thing is a bit steep. :)
A quick question about a replacement nut - F or G spacing, and if I am going to do it from a blank, how do I work out the correct slot spacing at the nut?
I'm taking creative advice on what to do with the inside of the guitar (f holes). Black? Silver?
Black metallic with large fleks would look cool in the f holes I think
This is how I've done my nuts. Print out, and find the appropriate width. Easy.

EDIT: For some reason it won't post the image, so here's the link.
Couldn't resist the urge to string her up and have a little strum without the electrics when the tuners got here.
They went on like a dream. It's a nice, mellow sounding guitar as it is now.
Pablo sent me some wicked pickup surrounds that will go on/in when I sand them to fit. Not long now - just gotta find out how I'm doing the wiring since I can't find the right switches - maybe two rotaries.
Sorry for the mobile photos, low quality and bad colour. Just had to take some snaps :)
Forgot to mention - I'm planning to upgrade the nut still, but there are some problems with fretbuzz with open notes when strumming hard, or fretting near the nut.
How can I tell if this is a relief issue or if it's a nut issue short of changing the nut already? I forgot!
Dang fancy tuners!
wow those tuners do look ultra cool Chris can see the gear mechanism.
The fret buzz problem could be a number of things. Once the bone nut goes in then you can fine tune the truss rod and setup but sure it will play and sound better with the bone nut.
Those tuners look great on it, very nice.
Gavin's Setting up your Intonation guide should walk you through it:
Step Three: Check string height at the nut.
To check the height of the nut, start at the low E string, and fret it on the third fret (a “G” note).
The string should be sitting on the first fret, or just above it, close enough just to see some light through the gap between the string and the fret.
Try holding the string down on the third fret and "tap" the string above the first fret, kind of like checking the neck relief.
You should be able to press the string down just ever so slightly onto the first fret.
