Unfortunately the body had a middle pickup which has been filled, but the outline can still be seen so it really needs a pickguard. Plus I have already bought blank cream scratchplate blanks, cream pickups and cream knobs so I really want to make this work. BUT I don’t have any power tools at the minute

I’m struggling to get the curves smooth and the straight lines straight. With a bit more work I reckon I can get it looking better but there is nooooooo way I will be able to get the pickup cavities tidy. I have a plastic template for the single coil cavities and I reckon I can place them pretty well but it’ll be impossible to cut or sand them straight. Apart from “buy a router” or “don’t use a scratchplate” any one got any advice on how I can do it?

After a few months off it’s time to get back to it. Pablo is in the process of helping me with a custom scratchplate for this kit. Although bad news is it was covered with a cloth and left in the shed, the heat has imprinted the cloth into the lacquer.

These combined I have made the decision to to strip to the bare wood and start again. I toyed with doing a relic and sanding the problem spots but this won’t be the last time I spray a guitar so I want more practice and get it right! So out with the heat gun this weekend!

When spraying the neck does everyone mask off the side bit of the fretboard or just the front?

Yep, mask the side too!
Mask the side if using colour, but the sides are normally clear coated along with the rear of the neck, otherwise you'll end up with a paint+clear coat ridge on the side of the neck which feels awkward.
