On my Red Ash J Bass there is more than 20 coats of TO and it still has the 'grain waves' visible which is a fairly unique look that I am really happy with and also a great conversation starter from everyone who looks at it.

Agree. The ash grain features in my JBA are part of its uniqueness and look great

Very nice headstock!
Is that an inlay sticker from Jockomo?
SET BACK DAY!
So after experimenting with some ideas to make the guitar face a black candy look (on test wood which worked fine) i started on the face of mine. My choice of topcoat did NOT agree with my process... bubbled up and made a horrible mess. Must have been some wierd properties of the wood but ultimately the finish was ruined.
So ive gone into damage control trying to get the finish off the face. The good news is its removing fine! Which also tells me the ash is in fact a lot thicker than i originally thought. All the grain pop and clean wood is still there and this time i have even better teeth for the stain. Im 80% through removal of the old finish and the ash is in perfect nick thank god.
No photos yet so i dont jinx it... but i rekon i got this saved thank god.
Lessons learned!
shame about the set back - was it an incompatibility between two products?
looked great how you had it - build looks awesome
Its a shame and also a blessing. Yes the paint was a 2 pack tech top coat and it freaked out.. bubbles everywhere. It hardened good enough for me to sand it off with no harm to the face though. Now i have even better surface than i did before. So back to square 1 but at least i learned a lot.
This time im going natural face. This same paint was used on the sides and back and it worked flawlessly, i got a piano black finish from it. So im gonna go piano black back and sides and natural face.
Still gonna stain but wont waste time on super high gloss for face.
Pics tonight.
