Beautiful color/binding combo!
Gav, stan, Woks and Jeff: cheers gents, still feeling very happy with how it's all going. I had to strip back to the primer in a small section yesterday as some major bubbling occurred in one section. I think it may have reacted with the detergent I was using when wet sanding because I only sanded that area to get a stray bug out of the clear coat. That or it could have been bug juice that did it..
Anyway I resprayed and it's coming along nicely again!
Any ideas how many coats I should go for? I'm using acrylic clear if that makes a difference ?
So a bit of an update on my tele build.
I cut out the headstock shape yesterday and have finished the clear coats. Just waiting for it to cure so I can do a final wet sand and polish.
Any ideas on what is the recommended amount of time to let acrylic clear cure? I've seen people say anything from 1 week to 3 months so a little unsure about this. I'm in Melbourne if that helps. It's bloody cold at the moment.
Received a nice new bridge with brass saddles, which I'm very pleased with. I'm almost certain it's the same one GFS sell for $24 USD plus postage and I found it for a fraction of that on ebay.
Have done a mock build and think that I may need to route a the bridge pickup cavity slightly larger. Will wait until I get the toneriders I've ordered from Adam until I start contemplating this though.
A couple more pics.
Gorgeous. I love Surf Green. It's probably my fav solid colour for guitars.
She's come up beautiful, a real classic.
I'm not sure I'd be contemplating sanding acrylic after just 1 week in this weather. I'd say more like 3 weeks (min), but others might be able to give a more accurate time frame.
Sniff test. Put your nose on it and sniff. If you can still smell solvents (after a week, you will) then it's not ready. I'd say at least 3 to 4 weeks.
classic, just right, well done
Thanks for the kind words and advice :-)
I've been sniffing my guitar regularly, which is worrying my girlfriend slightly but I've assured her it's a necessary part of the build..
I guess I'll just play the waiting game now... A dangerous game as I just keep buying stuff for the build with money I don't have when I have no painting to occupy myself with:-)
On that note. For anyone who's interested, GuitarAust are trialling free postage for 3 months with packages over $50. I just bought some parchment pickguard blanks, some cts 250k pots and a radiused sanding block, all of which seem to be good quality.
Also found some car buffing drill attachments on ebay that I might stick to my orbital sander and see how that goes with the buffing process. My drill is gutless so thought I'd see how the sander goes on my test piece.
what a beaut, the binding really complements the colour, great finish as well
