On the necks I've built I installed them slightly long with overhang and trimmed them back to the fretboard before filing the ends round. This time I did a lot of the rounding/shaping before they went in.

I'm thinking about doing a bound fretboard on the next one so this is good practice.

I do it similar to your old method in that I pre-cut each fret in order; place them in a wooden block with holes numbered 1-24. Then I install, trim etc. I do cut them with only a couple of mil overhang on each end though.
I like having them all in before shaping because I use a block with a file set at 35ｰ to get the bevel all the same, then tidy up each with a fret end file.
Just goes to show there are multiple ways of proverbial cat-skinning.

However if I was making my own fretboards like you, I'd probably make the extra effort. Especially on a timber with a unique or very individual colour.
I'm presently contemplating a re-radius and re-fret on a bog standard maple neck I have since I'm taking a break from doing complete builds at the moment.
I never though of using timbermate. But given the colour of the sheoak board I知 not sure I could get a match and it would have bugged me if it wasn稚 quite right.Quote:

Decided to lose the gold, this is better. I wonder if I could make a nut out of aluminium? Don't see why not...
I'm now thinking of doing the humbucker surround in alum as well.. but I think I'll wait and see as it does need to sit up a fair bit off the scratchplate, so might stick with the black plastic.
